Data sources

A research tool is only as honest as its sourcing. This page says where every figure in the workspace comes from, and how far it can be trusted.

Rules the workspace follows

  • A blank is better than a guess. Where a source does not publish a field, the field stays empty.
  • Inferred values are labelled. A value derived rather than published is marked, so the two are never read as the same thing.
  • An estimate is called an estimate. Traffic figures are third-party estimates and are described as such wherever they appear.
  • One credential, one owner. Each account’s network credentials are used only for that account’s own work.

Public pages are read at a deliberately slow rate, one request at a time with a gap between them, and the workspace stops when a source signals it is being asked for too much.
